Reflection: Why do schools teach what they teach? This course strived to help me answer this question. I was exposed to various theorists and belief systems. As I explored their beliefs and theories, I pieced together mine as well. As an educator, I continue to grapple with the above question every day, replacing schools with I. Curriculum continues to change, with the ultimate goal of educating all children.

"We have to teach children how they can learn, not what we should think they should learn."
Henry Winkler, author, actor
Reflection: Many striving readers struggle to find books that are interesting and engaging. As I first met with my striving reader for this class, my goal was to connect with her in a fun way.  These cards were used with a game, but can be used in many other ways too.  They are valuable in building a trusting relationship, and breaking down any barriers between student/tutor. The information gained from this activity was insightful and helped me to plan and make decisions for further sessions. I continue to use these cards in my 1st grade classroom at the beginning of year, and with students I tutor.
