"More drills for poor readers do not work." Stephen Krashen

Reflection: The language and literacy exchange exposed me to new research and theory.  I especially became interested in Stephen Krashen's third hypothesis/theory and affective filter.  I am conscious of this affective filter theory as I connect with my students on a daily basis.  In response, this course work encouraged me to research culturally responsive strategies that are applied in my classroom today.

“Without spending increasingly longer periods of time reading, they won’t build endurance as readers, either. Students need time to read and time to be readers.” Donalyn Miller

Reflection: The Fluent Reader

by Timothy Rasinski is one professional resource that I use to incorporate best practices into my classroom.  I use a poetry routine in my classroom every day to practice fluency.  Poetry passages are sent home for connecting parents to their child's reading.  All my students have grown in their fluency this school year and the research and strategies found within this text have supported my planning and instruction.
